When I took my first creative writing class, I was only a teenager. There was a creative writing enrichment program at an art college down the street, and I thought that I could use it as a way to develop my poetry. My parents liked the idea a lot. They loved my writing, and they wanted to see me take it as far as I could.

I was very excited about creative writing classes, and the course didn’t disappoint me. I had had some opportunity to write creatively in high school, of course, and I spent a lot of time on my own writing poetry and short stories. Nonetheless, that creative writing class was beyond anything I had ever done. Being able to work with a more experienced, established writer one on one to refine my writing techniques was just an incredible thrill for me. The other students were very talented, so it was also nice to be able to work in such great company.

From the very first day, the teacher was careful to tailor the creative writing workshop to our needs. She worked individually with every student to find out our expectations, then met with us as a class. We each got to talk about the things that we liked to write, what we wanted to learn, and how we anticipated getting there. She shared her own background as a writer with us, and even shared some of her own writing.I wrote dozens of poems in my creative writing class, and workshopped most of them. It was really nice to be able to painstakingly perfect each poem. At first, it was a little bit scary. I had never been asked to edit my poems carefully before, and the experience was tough. Nonetheless, everyone was very supportive. Being in a creative writing class means being surrounded by people who know what it is like to put yourself out there for the judgments of other people. There were always positive comments, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

By the time the creative writing class was done, I knew that I wanted to spend my career as a writer. As soon as I graduated high school, I enrolled in the creative writing program At the big state college. Although I wasn’t able to take a creative writing class my first semester, I did get some fascinating literature courses from the very beginning. Pretty soon, I was taking poetry workshops, fiction writing courses and many other fascinating classes in composition. It seemed like every creative writing class was better than the last. I have to say that studying to be a writer was probably one of the most fascinating and rewarding chapters of my life so far.

When I was a kid, I wanted to take guitar, but my mom made me take keyboard lessons instead. She argued that the best thing to do was to learn music theory. After that, I could go anywhere with it. I would be allowed to learn basically any instrument I wanted within reason. I wasn’t very excited about learning musical theory, and I certainly wasn’t that excited about the keyboard. I wanted to play guitar like my favorite rock stars did. Nonetheless, I knew that the only way to do that was to go by her rules. Once my mom made up her mind, she seldom went back.

I never really liked the keyboard even when I was playing it, but once I started to learn music theory I get really excited about it. I had always had a pretty good intuitive ear for music, but learning theory brought it to another level. The structures that I had observed for so many years suddenly had names. I could point to my favorite devices in music and identify them, understanding how they worked and why they sounded like they did. I even started to write my own songs, although I wasn’t very good at it at first. After about a year or so of piano lessons, my mom relented and let me learn some guitar. I decided to learn music theory for guitar as well. The interesting thing about keyboard is that whatever you learn on it you can take with you to other instruments. Although guitar theory doesn’t necessarily translate to keyboards, for example, keyboard theory does translate to guitars. A keyboard is basically a row of all the notes laid out in a logical order, so you really get to see how the theory of music works. You can then take that knowledge to a more arbitrary instrument like the guitar, flute, clarinet, or anything else.

Still, learning music theory on an instrument I really enjoyed for me to a whole other level. Suddenly, I was coming up with songs that I liked and making progress in my instrument. When I was learning the piano, it was always very slow going. I would learn music theory and pick up some playing techniques, but I didn’t show any particular skill or promise at it. With guitar, however, I was really starting to move. I soon had a good intuitive understanding of the way it worked, and could play many of my favorite songs. I had managed to learn music theory to such an advanced level that I could pretty much analyze any song I heard on the radio and understand what was going on in it. I wasn’t great at guitar or anything, but being grounded in the basics of music gave me enough background to start playing my own songs.

Gifted children need extra help in their studies to make sure they can learn at the appropriate level. The Summer Institute for the Gifted (aka SIG) is a program designed for children and teenagers, meeting their academic and social needs. The program began in 1984 and many students have taken advantage of it and enjoyed the facilities provided.

Three-week residential programs take place at a choice of venues, which include Amherst College, Bryn Mawr College, the Austin campus of the University of Texas, Emory University, UC Berkeley, UCLA and Vassar College. Children aged approximately 9 – 18 years old, who have completed the 4th through 11th Grade are eligible. Princeton University also hosts the Summer Institute for the Gifted for students who have completed 7th to 11th Grade.

The program is well structured, offering a range of studies and the opportunity to socialize and make new friends. Students stay in college dormitories with spaces for 10 – 12 residents and are under the supervision of the Counselor. The staff also include a Housemaster and a Residential Assistant. Meals are eaten in the dining rooms on campus.

Classes are organized into five periods, lasting 75 minutes each. The three subject areas are Science, Math and Liberal Arts. These are divided into topics, such as chemistry, biology, robotics and math subjects, including geometry and algebra. Homework is given to students to do when class is over for the day. However, it’s not all class work at the Summer Institute for the Gifted. Students are given an hour of recreation each day and they can choose to participate in sports, spend time in one of the laboratories, or have free time on the computer or in the dormitory.Evening entertainment is provided in a range of fun activities, such as talent shows, dances and contests. Saturdays is the time for group trips to local attractions, including museums, or the zoo. Families can visit students on the second Sunday of their stay and some parents like to take the student off campus for their visit.

There are Day Programs available too for the Summer Institute for the Gifted. These take place at Fairfield University, Manhattanville College, Moorestown Friends School, Stuart Country Day School and Bryn Mawr College. To be eligible, students must have completed kindergarten through 6th Grade and be approximately aged 5 – 11 years old.

Gifted students sometimes struggle in the normal school environment, where they can become bored or frustrated with work that is too easy for them. In the Summer Institute for the Gifted, the organizers recognize this concern and the program is designed for the students to thrive in a friendly atmosphere. The work is challenging, ensuring that students are stimulated and they enjoy the experience. To be eligible for the program, candidates must score more than 97% on standardized tests or come with a recommendation from a teacher.

You may not think about doing much more online than using email and looking up information about whatever is on your mind. There is so much more to the Internet, and you can help with just about anything. If you are looking for learning online for kids, you just have to look in the right place. Though some things online are not what they promise, there are many great web sites out there that can really give your children the learning tools they need to do better in school. If you home school, these sites are going to be invaluable to you.

Home schooling is the clue you need to find learning online for kids. Though there are some of these sites that do not have a lot to offer, most of them have very useful tools on them. You can get things like print outs, and perhaps you can find some interactive tools that you can use for learning online for kids in regards to math, English, and even problem solving skills. Don’t discount the simple lessons, as they lay the foundation for more complex learning on down the road.

Those that home school put together sites if they have had great success with things that they have found elsewhere or have come up with on their own. There are sites for learning online for kids that works with all age groups. You can search by grade, or you can see if your favorite site has an option for going by age or grade level. Some have the same lessons that are tailored for different ages, and some specialize in just one age group. All are great and useful for learning online for kids.

There are other sites that are not built for home schooling, but are great for learning online for kids none the less. You may think some of them are too commercial, and that they only have games, but many of these games are highly educational. For the most part, playing games is a good way to learn because it does not feel like learning. It feels like fun. Most of these learning online for kids sites are for those that are younger, even for those that are preschool age, but they are great for laying a good foundation to start kindergarten the right way.Getting good learning online for kids might also mean that you find some great web sites that offer learning materials that you can order and have sent to your home. You can get things to supplement what your children are doing in school if they need more of a challenge, or if they are falling behind. You can also order just about anything that you need for your home schooling endeavor. No matter what type of materials you need, you are going to find great learning online for kids resources if you just take a bit to find what works best for you.

Whether you’re a native English speaker or have emigrated from another country, every one can stand to improve English speech, writing, comprehension and rhetorical skills. Language is our means of communication. When you advance your language skills, you become a better communicator and thus meet with greater success in your social and business interactions. Misunderstandings, due to poor English, can be avoided when you seek to improve your skills. Here are five easy exercises, that, when practiced consistently, will set you on the path to a mastery of English.

Improving English language skills always involves building your vocabulary. To this end, get a good dictionary. If you’re not a native English speaker, get a combination dictionary which provides two sections, one in your native language and the other in English. In either case, choose at least five new English words to learn each day. Keep a list as you go along and periodically review your list. With just five words per day, your vocabulary will increase by almost 2,000 words in a year! If you use a combination dictionary, look for words you know in your native language that you don’t know how to express in English. This method can really get you up to speed in a hurry.

When you look to improve English skills, a grammar book is essential. There are a number of excellent grammar books. One classic text is Strunk & White’s ‘Elements of Grammar’. Another terrific resource is ‘Essentials of English’, which covers grammar, correct usage and punctuation, with separate sections which teach you how to achieve clarity in your speech and writing, as well as getting into commonly misused words and expressions.

Although your grammar book discusses parts of sentences, syntax is often one of the most difficult areas to master. Syntax is how you order the words in a sentence. To improve English skills in this area, study the parts of sentences in particular detail. Practice and enlist the help of a skilled native English speaker to enhance your skills. You’ve doubtless heard of the language immersion techniques, where a person is put amongst people who speak nothing but the native language. Through repetition, imagery and demonstration, people can learn a language in a couple of weeks, at least to a conversational level. Try this with friends and ask for corrections and feedback.

Finally, sign up for an English course. It can take place in a classroom, through an email course, distance learning or through online video seminars. Choose the venue that suits your abilities and schedule.

Follow these five avenues to improving English. Be consistent in your practice sessions. You’ll eventually achieve a relative degree of mastery of the English language. Remember, there’s always something left to learn!

It is amazing to see the transformation in the area of media studies in the last couple of decades. The study of media, after all, used to be a pretty fringe fields. Sure, there was some study of classical music and high art cinema, to say nothing of literature, but popular culture was always considered a lesser area of study. Studying the media was something that was either viewed as avant-garde or useless – sometimes both.

If you want proof that our society is an information society, you need look no further than in the area of media studies. Nowadays, this is one of the fastest growing sectors. Everything from advertising to pop culture, music production to film studies is exploding. While the manufacturing industry continues to decline, media production just gets bigger and bigger. Decades after we are no longer making anything in this country, we will still make the best movies in the world.Nowadays, you almost have an embarrassment of riches in media studies courses. There is history of media, media economics, art criticism, and of course psychological and anthropological studies. There really is too much to read in the field of media studies, so you need to narrow it down a little bit. The important thing isn’t really which books you want to read – you can read anything on your own – but what area you want to get into. If you want to be a producer or promoter, you might want to study popular culture or advertising. If you want to be an engineer, you could study production. And then if you want to make media yourself, you can go to film school or enroll in a creative writing program.

Then again, some people get into media study simply as a matter of cultural fluency. Just as back in the day we used to have to read all of the great classics to feel like fully informed members of society, nowadays we have to read the correct blogs and understand the history of electronic media. Things have changed massively, but in some ways they haven’t changed at all. It is ultimately still a matter of understanding the cultural phenomena that make our world what it is today. That has always been, and will always be the most important part of studying art and media in my opinion. The rest of media studies is interesting – sometimes fascinating – but optional.

There are some great programs online that you can use to further your education. Though there are always going to be some courses of study that require you to attend a college, some can be done from home and completed almost exclusively without ever stepping foot on a campus. Some of these are basic degrees, but some are also extended degrees. When it comes to psychology, programs vary. If you are going to take psychology online courses, there are a few things of which you should consider.

What is wonderful about psychology online courses is that these can be done when you have the extra time. You don’t have to attend day classes if you do not want to, and if you have to do an internship, you can do one in your own community. Some schools that offer psychology online courses accept members and students from all over the country because those students do not need to show up in person. Find out if your program fits those requirements or not.

However, when you take psychology online courses, you had better be sure that you have the time. You can have a full time job and children and take these, but that does not always work out. Some going for advanced psychology online courses are going to find that they have a lot of work to do and they do not have any leeway in doing it. You could have ten to twelve papers due a week, and you will not get a time extension in most cases. You should look into the work load and consider your time in life when you decide you can do it or if you can not.You may also have to consider how much money you have to put into your psychology online courses. Though you can get your tuition covered with student loans and aid at times, there could be other things that you have to have. Some can have their books and materials covered and some can not. You have to have quiet time too, and that means a home area that you can use as an office. If not, you may have to go to a library to study for your psychology online courses, and we all know that can be a pain when time is tight.

Consider your computer, as well, when thinking about taking psychology online courses. You want something fast and reliable. If you have that, and everything above works out, you can get your degree and know that you have done something to better your life. Sometimes, it just takes a nudge to get us moving in the right direction. If someone you love is considering this, do all you can to encourage them, and then all you can do to help them out. It might be tough for a while, but it is well worth all of the trouble.

I have always considered myself to be a good parent, but I never knew how many things I didn’t know about my little ones until I took a class in child development psychology. I have been interested in child development and psychology for as long as I can remember so, when I went back to school, it was only natural that I get a degree specializing in that field. I had figured that, as an astute student of human nature, I would be well within my comfort zone. The joke was on me when the child development psychology class was more strange and foreign than I could have imagined.

Not that it wasn’t a fascinating class. It can be a real joy to be challenged, and I felt challenged very day. Child psychology, I learned in that class, is anything but static. From day to day, week to week, and month to month, children are learning and becoming better, more sophisticated thinkers. That means that the interests, fears, and obsessions that a kid has one day will not necessarily even be a factor within a month or two. Kids come up with phobias, only to lose them just as quickly. They get so interested in a toy that they can’t put it down, only to get bored with it all of the sudden and never touch it again. These are some of the paradoxes of child development psychology. To us, the adults, these behaviors may seem strange, but to a child development psychologist they make a lot of sense. There is a lot more purpose in the way that kids interact with the world than most people can even see. One of the central teachings of child development psychology is that make believe is a sort of way for kids to model behaviors and explore the world around them. When they come up with a new interest and lose all affection for an old one, it is because they are discarding an old behavior, motivation, or idea in favor of something new. Sometimes, they will come back to it at a later time. Just as often, however, once it is gone it is gone for good.

I think the child development psychology classes have even effected the way I care for my kids. I used to feel guilty about sending them to after care or making them stay over at their friends houses sometimes, but I have since realized that that guilt was misplaced. By being forced to spend more time in a group environment, my kids get the chance to learn how to interact with other children in a social setting. This is one of the most important stages in child development psychology, so I am actually helping them!

Finding the right tutoring services can be very difficult. Some learning centers make promises that they just can’t keep, while other ones are so obscure that it is almost impossible to hear about them unless you have connections. I used to provide tutor services at a learning center, so I know all about it. We were actually a small tutoring center. We were not very well known, and we were in the same town as Sylvan learning Center. They had a lot of buzz, while we were almost invisible.

Nonetheless, we were very popular with the parents of our students, and other parents who had heard about us through them. Learning centers usually work in one of two ways. The big ones, of course, work through advertising. They have a huge nationwide network, make a lot of money, and can afford to advertise. The smaller learning centers, however, work mostly through networking. Instead of buying services of a set program designed by the learning center, the parents are paying for the services of an individual tutor. They know all the tutors at these learning centers, and most of the tutors don’t tend to go away very quickly. That way, they can count on having the same help for their kids year after year.Working as a tutor was one of the most rewarding things that I ever did. At first, I was surprised at how hard the work was. I thought that it would be an easy way to make money, but it was anything but easy. From the first day, I had to invent curriculum on the fly. It wasn’t one of those learning centers where they hire a math tutors or an English tutors for a certain grade level. At our place, everyone had to do everything. Some days, we would help the kids with their homework, while other days we would study areas that they were having problems in. With a lot of these kids, they have such bad learning disabilities that it was a struggle just to keep up.

Nevertheless, through constant hard work and dedication, we were able to make big improvements in their lives. When they came to us with good grades, it was such a proud moment for me. I was able to help kids who could barely read advance to become fine, articulate students with interesting well-developed ideas. This is the joy of working in learning centers. There is nothing quite like it.
