There was a time when there were not many first class performing arts schools around in the UK. This situation is changing and Britain is building a reputation for offering an excellent curriculum. In New York City, there is already a tradition of preparing students for a career in the entertainment and arts industries.
The New York High School for the Performing Arts is well known from its depiction in the Fame movie and subsequent TV series. The school merged with a sister school and is now known as the Fiorello H. Guardia High School of Music, Art & Performing Arts, based in Manhattan. The prospectus includes programs for Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, Vocal, Instrumental Music, and Technical Theatre. In addition to their chosen arts subject, students must study a required curriculum, including English, Math, Science, History, Language and Physical Education. This Performing Arts School (from the original school) has produced an impressive number of alumni over the years, including Laura Nyro, Suzanne Vega, Jennifer Aniston, Adrien Brody, and Wesley Snipes.
The Juillard School in New York City is housed at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. It has an international reputation for its program of dance, drama, and music. The school’s alumni are particularly well represented in the world of classical music and jazz. Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, cellist Yo Yo Ma, and minimalist composer Philip Glass all attended Juillard. Famous actors have also come through its doors, including Kelsey Grammar, Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams. All music students at this Performing Arts School must study sight singing and music theory, along with their chosen instrument. Going to a talented and gifted school was quite a privilege, but it also involved quite a few more responsibilities than other kids had. When I was growing up, most talented and gifted schools cost an arm and a leg. My parents didn’t have a lot of money, so we were lucky we were able to find a gifted charter school in the area. It was actually not quite in our immediate area. It was a good half hour drive each way to school – not a problem for me, but quite an inconvenience for my parents who both worked 50 hours a week or more. Nonetheless, they wanted the best for me, so they made the commitment to drive me there. There was no bus that went there, so they had to carpool every morning. That meant that I would have to get there an hour before school and stay an hour late.
Of course, like any good talented and gifted school, the academy I went to gave out a lot of homework, so I made use of that extra time in school. It meant that, by the time I got home at night, I had a good start on my homework and that, if I did not get everything done before I went to sleep, I still had an hour to do it in the morning. It is universally acknowledged that Harvard Medical School is the leading medical school in the United States. Misunderstandings, due to poor English, can be avoided when you seek to improve your skills. Here are five easy exercises, that, when practiced consistently, will set you on the path to a mastery of English.
Improving English language skills always involves building your vocabulary. To this end, get a good dictionary. If you’re not a native English speaker, get a combination dictionary which provides two sections, one in your native language and the other in English. In either case, choose at least five new English words to learn each day. Keep a list as you go along and periodically review your list. With just five words per day, your vocabulary will increase by almost 2,000 words in a year! If you use a combination dictionary, look for words you know in your native language that you don’t know how to express in English. This method can really get you up to speed in a hurry.
When you look to improve English skills, a grammar book is essential. There are a number of excellent grammar books. One classic text is Strunk & White’s ‘Elements of Grammar’. Another terrific resource is ‘Essentials of English’, which covers grammar, correct usage and punctuation, with separate sections which teach you how to achieve clarity in your speech and writing, as well as getting into commonly misused words and expressions.
Although your grammar book discusses parts of sentences, syntax is often one of the most difficult areas to master. Syntax is how you order the words in a sentence. It is amazing to see the transformation in the area of media studies in the last couple of decades. The study of media, after all, used to be a pretty fringe fields. Sure, there was some study of classical music and high art cinema, to say nothing of literature, but popular culture was always considered a lesser area of study. Studying the media was something that was either viewed as avant-garde or useless – sometimes both.

It is an appalling fact that approximately 25% of America’s adult population is functionally illiterate! These are figures compiled by the government. What is functionally illiterate? If a person is unable to fill out a form, or job application without help, they are considered to be functionally illiterate. It’s easy to see that this person would have a hard time in the marketplace, which impacts the entire society. If someone can’t get or hold a job, society suffers as a whole.
Literacy and adult education goes hand in hand. Due to failures in the public education system, kids are graduating from high school unable to read or find New York City on a map. The school system has put them out in the real world without sufficient skills to manage their own life. These kids seldom pursue literacy and adult education, becoming resigned to menial jobs with no future.
An impoverished and uneducated population is not good for any of us. Being in a state of poverty with no prospects open in the future also leads to these kids getting into drugs and drug dealing. It simply becomes the point of least resistance. Although they know the consequences of getting caught, they get too into this method of making quick, easy money. Many become addicts along the way. Young, uneducated women may get married early, soon having kids to support which only worsens the situation. Others, with diminished self-esteem, fall into prostitution. The problem with impoverished families is that, lacking functional literacy and adult education, this creates a cycle of poverty that can go on for generations. Divorce rates among young people with these problems is particularly high, when compared with other age groups with a better education.
While there are some free literacy and adult education programs, if you can’t read, how will you ever know about them? It seems that it would be a smart idea to be proactive about ending this cycle of poverty.
The current public education system has failed these people. However, the current policies virtually punish these individuals. The young woman, now single, with three kids, is given a welfare payment allotment and is chided to get a job. The amount given is insufficient to afford a living, so that person falls further and further into poverty. What is this young woman to do? Some states will pay for day care, but the process takes 3-4 months for approval. If she doesn’t look for work, because she has to watch her children, she is disqualified to receive her welfare payment. The current policies create a catch-22 situation. Which, unfortunately causes some to begin taking some of the other illegal options, requiring neither literacy or adult education. Hopefully, you live in a school district that has not had to cut back on their school music programs. This is not the case for many schools, as some very good programs have had to be cut back, or cut out all together. This is a shame, as not only is music fun for children, it is also something that can help them with their learning. If you fear the programs in your school are going to be cut, you should have your say when it comes time for the decision to be made by the school board.
Even school districts that tend to have a better budget than others have problems with school music programs. I know that my daughter goes to a great public school that is in a rather high earning small city. Her art classes, along with some of the music programs, have been cut down. They have one teacher doing the job of two or three in each category, and that means smaller class times. Once person is now at three elementary schools when they could spend all of their time in just one school.
Some school music programs still offer what is known to most kids as music class. This is where they learn about music and do a lot of singing, and they may experiment with some instruments like percussion items or recorders. This may be tied with the school chorus programs. Of all the school music programs, these may be the safest. However, there are many instrumental programs that are being cut down, and that is when the students are going to suffer. Less instruments are available for children to learn with, and the teachers just don’t have the time to teach those with their own instruments as they have had in the past. There are some great programs online that you can use to further your education. Though there are always going to be some courses of study that require you to attend a college, some can be done from home and completed almost exclusively without ever stepping foot on a campus. Some of these are basic degrees, but some are also extended degrees. When it comes to psychology, programs vary. What is wonderful about psychology online courses is that these can be done when you have the extra time. You don’t have to attend day classes if you do not want to, and if you have to do an internship, you can do one in your own community. Some schools that offer psychology online courses accept members and students from all over the country because those students do not need to show up in person. Find out if your program fits those requirements or not.
However, when you take psychology online courses, you had better be sure that you have the time. You can have a full time job and children and take these, but that does not always work out. Some going for advanced psychology online courses are going to find that they have a lot of work to do and they do not have any leeway in doing it. You could have ten to twelve papers due a week, and you will not get a time extension in most cases.
